Background
In December 2005, Allina Hospitals & Clinics board of directors approved plans to move forward with the feasibility design phase of a new hospital in Owatonna to replace the facility located at 903 South Oak Avenue, Owatonna. Portions of the existing hospital date as far back as 1931.
The new hospital sits on 20 acres and connects to the Owatonna Clinic-Mayo Health System 26th Street facility, creating an integrated healthcare campus.
Owatonna Hospital is designing and building a facility for the future. This includes creating the flexibility to provide emergency, behavioral, surgical, health and medical services to meet the expanding and changing needs of the community. The replacement hospital is being built using design principles to promote healing; improve patient safety and workflow among physicians, nurses and staff; bring in natural light; and respect patient privacy. Some of these concepts include the use of soothing colors, use of natural light and views to nature. In addition, plans call for private patient rooms. The new hospital will also operate in an electronic environment. The use of an electronic medical record (EMR), will increase safety and efficiency at Owatonna Hospital.
The vision for a healthcare campus in Owatonna began in 1999 with construction plans for Owatonna Clinic’s 26th Street location and the purchase of additional land to accommodate a healthcare campus.
Groundbreaking was held July 31, 2007.
Opening is set for Friday, Oct. 16, 2009.
