Community Support/Volunteer Opportunities

New Ulm Medical Center is fortunate to have over 130 active volunteers and over 275 auxiliary members. In 2007, volunteers worked over 10,000 hours in the medical center, many of those in the coffee/gift shop.

Volunteers can also be found lending their time and talents in the following areas:

  • front desk/information
  • oncology department
  • radiology department
  • surgery waiting room
  • medical/surgical department
  • hospice department
  • physical medicine department
  • emergency department
  • clinic front desk
  • scheduling
  • in clerical capacities working in various departments

Annually, the NUMC auxiliary generally donates up to $50,000 to the medical center through fundraisers like the Sweetheart Bake Sale, Fluff-n-Puff pillow cleaning, book fairs, a jewelry sale, our Holiday Happiness sale, and a quilt raffle. please see our fundraisers page

Additionally, the auxiliary made a $75,000 pledge towards the surgery renovation and expansion project that will be completed in winter 2009. They also donated $2,200 for the installation of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) near the auditorium at the medical center.

With funds they raise and donate, the auxiliary is able to enhance the quality of patient experiences by supplying all patient rooms with televisions and paying the cable television bills on those each month. They also provide coloring books and crayons for pediatric patients, hand-made knit hats for newborns, courtesy meal cards for fasting patients, oncology patients, EMTs and helicopter pilots.

Volunteerism has been a tradition in the New Ulm medical community and has evolved along with the medical facilities in town. Union Hospital started its hospital auxiliary in 1947 and Loretto Hospital’s auxiliary was founded in 1957. When the hospitals merged in 1981 to become Sioux Valley Hospital, the two separate auxiliaries also became one. For more on the history of New Ulm Medical Center, see our history page.

Please consider becoming a part of the tradition of caring through volunteerism and complete our Volunteer Application.. If you are interested in becoming a member of the auxiliary (with dues at a reasonable $5 a year), please complete the auxiliary membership application

For more information on volunteering or the auxiliary, please contact volunteer coordinator Missy Dreckman at 233-1180. For volunteering specifically within the hospice program, contact Bonnie Beranek at 233-1375.
