Owatonna Hospital’s Expanding the Dream capital campaign receives $250,000 in additional donations from area businesses, individualsOWATONNA, Minn. 08/05/2008--Thanks to area donors such as Riverland Community College, SPX, J-C Press, Kaplan’s and Gopher Sport, Owatonna Hospital has received additional donations of more than $250,000 for their Expanding the Dream capital campaign. With these latest donations, the campaign has now raised nearly $2.8 million toward its $3 million goal. The latest donations, ranging from $15,000 to $100,000, will fund special features of the new hospital. The Expanding the Dream campaign is a community venture launched earlier this year to fund special features of the new hospital, which were identified as important during community forums and an online survey. Along with donations pledged from local businesses, community leaders, and foundations, the Owatonna Hospital Foundation has been conducting a telefundraising campaign to further fund the special features. An anonymous donor has indicated a dollar-to-dollar match up to $10,000 during the telefundraising campaign. Riverland Community College, for example, designated $100,000 to help support a Professional Education Center, which will train the next generation of health professionals and facilitate the training of nurses and other allied professionals by providing them with hands-on simulation training, remote conferencing, and traditional classroom education in a setting built especially for them. Dr. Terry Leas, president of Riverland Community College said, “Riverland Community College is honored to join Owatonna Hospital in creating a Professional Education Center that will offer more opportunities to prepare people seeking high-skill, high-wage and high-demand jobs in the healthcare field.” Gopher Sport requested their donation help fund the Center for Health & Wellness . “Gopher Sport became involved with the Expanding the Dream campaign as a result of discussions that centered on the impact the new hospital would provide to the community at-large,” said Doug Nelson, president of Gopher Sport. “Health and wellness of young people is certainly a key part of our company’s mission and to be able to have this opportunity to support this initiative is beneficial to our employees at Gopher Sport and to the entire community.” Other design features in the plan include the Owatonna Commons, an Indoor Walking Path, a Community Resource Center and a Reflection Center. Individuals and businesses who have recently contributed to the general fund include Kennard and Jean Kaplan ($50,000), SPX ($15,000) and J-C Press ($30,000). One hundred percent of the donations to the Expanding the Dream campaign will be used to fund the Special Project Features. Allina Hospitals & Clinics is fully responsible for the funding the construction of the replacement hospital, which is expected to open upon its completion in October 2009. The total value of the new not-for-profit hospital construction project is $51.6 million. Twenty acres of land was donated by the Owatonna Clinic-Mayo Health System several years ago and was recently valued at $2.6 million. The new Owatonna Hospital will be built from the ground up with the needs of patients and family members at the forefront in planning, design and architecture. The two-story, 38-bed hospital will contain more than 140,000 square feet and include private patient rooms; expanded surgery suites, Emergency Department; inpatient unit, Sleep Lab, Birth Center and Mental Health Unit; diagnostic imaging; rehabilitation services; ample parking as well as the special project feature enhancements. The new Owatonna hospital will be connected to the newly expanded Owatonna Clinic’s current 26th Street location.
