New pediatric program offered at Owatonna Hospital through Kenny Kids™ program, Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute - Owatonna
OWATONNA, Minn. 01/08/2010--Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute – Owatonna (formerly the Center for Rehab & Wellness) now offers Kenny Kids™ - a specialized pediatric rehabilitation program for children from birth to age 18 with injuries, medical conditions or syndromes that may interfere with normal development.
The Kenny Kids team of therapists has extensive training in pediatric rehab. Physical therapists focus on increasing flexibility, balance, coordination and gross motor skills such as rolling, crawling, running or jumping. The occupational therapists focus on fine motor coordination; sensory processing, including sensitivity training to touch, movement, and noise; daily living skills; and cognitive skills, including problem solving and attention span. The speech-language pathologists focus on improving the ability to produce speech, put words together and understand language, as well as overcoming swallowing, voice and communications problems.
Since children learn best through play, Kenny Kids therapists incorporate fun activities into each therapy session. The bright, cheerful pediatric rehabilitation area in the new Owatonna Hospital includes a climbing wall to improve motor skills, stretch and strengthen muscles, as well as increase developmental capabilities. The pediatric area also includes a gym, private treatment rooms and a room for parents to watch their child’s therapy session on live-video.
"Partnering our existing pediatric services with Kenny Kids allows us to offer even more specialized treatments and services, and more resources for parents," says Linda Hoffman, occupational therapist and manager of Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute – Owatonna. "Our Kenny Kids staff are now part of a larger group of therapists dedicated to the care of children and with more access to continuing education opportunities and sharing of best practices."
A referral is needed from a child’s doctor before therapy can begin. Kenny Kids, part of Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute – Owatonna, is located at Owatonna Hospital. For more information call 507-977-2150 or visit owatonnahospital.com.
