Is cancer in your genes?
FRIDLEY, Minn. 01/16/2009--
Is cancer the result of genetics or environmental factors? What role does family history have in our individual risk for cancer? These questions are asked of health professionals every day.
Learn more about genetics and cancer at a free community forum: Hereditary Cancer: Are You at Risk? This forum will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Thursday, February 19, 2009, in the Unity Hospital Auditorium, 550 Osborne Road NE, Fridley, Minnesota.
The majority of cancers occur without any inherited risk. In fact, only about five to ten percent of all cancers are linked to hereditary factors. However, there are several characteristics that indicate the possibility of inherited risk with in a family.
Unity Cancer Center genetic counselor, Denise Marty, will lead the forum with a presentation on hereditary risks for a variety of cancers, and how family history and genetic factors determine whether your family may be at an increased risk. Participants will be able to explore their personal predisposition to cancer with an interactive activity. The forum will conclude with an interactive question and answer session.
