Controlling cancer side effects is forum topic

FRIDLEY, Minn. 02/04/2008--Cancer rehabilitation experts will lead a free community forum, “Lymphedema and Cancer Rehabilitation,” on Thursday, February 21, 2008. The forum, presented by Mercy & Unity Hospitals Cancer Center, will be held at 6:30 p.m., at the Unity Hospital Auditorium, 550 Osborne Road, Fridley.

“During and after surgical and medical cancer treatments, individuals have unique needs in achieving the highest level of function and independence possible,” says Nancy Hutchinson, M.D., a physical medicine specialist and one of the forum’s speakers. “Cancer rehabilitation can improve patients’ quality of life and help them in resuming their previous lifestyles.”

For example, lymphedema -- swelling in the area of the lymph nodes that is often painful -- can occur as a result of any cancer or cancer treatment such as surgery or radiation therapy. Lymphedema can present early in cancer treatment or years after cancer treatment. Preventing, recognizing and treating lymphedema and other cancer or treatment side effects, such as pain control, bladder and bowel management, and weakness will also be discussed.

Dr. Hutchinson and physical therapist Carmela Claypool of Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute will lead the discussion. The evening will conclude with an open and interactive question and answer session.

Space is limited. Please register by calling the Cancer Resource Center at 763-236-4040.
