Owatonna Hospital names medical director for surgical services

OWATONNA, Minn 01/04/2008--Dean Olsen, M.D., orthopedic surgeon at the Owatonna Clinic – Mayo Health System has been named the new medical director of Surgical Services for Owatonna Hospital. Olsen will work closely with the hospital' s Surgical Services manager in a paired leadership role. Olsen will continue his clinical practice at Owatonna Clinic while serving as medical director.

"Dr. Olsen is known for his clinical work and commitment, and brings a wealth of experience to our surgical services here. With continuous changes in surgery, he’s a solid leader with an eye on patient safety, patient flow, efficiencies and future advancements."

Surgical services which include expanding sub-specialties are receiving greater oversight and scrutiny by regulatory agencies, said Dorothy Erdmann, president, Owatonna Hospital. She added, "This newly created position is another example of the commitment of collaboration between Owatonna Hospital and Owatonna Clinic to provide exceptional care in our community."

Olsen has established a highly respected surgical career in Owatonna. He’s been a member of the Owatonna Clinic medical staff since 2000 and serves on many committees and boards including the Owatonna Clinic Board of Directors as well as the former chair of the Owatonna Hospital’s Surgical Services Committee. He attended medical school and completed his residency at Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland.

Owatonna Hospital provides a full range of health care services including a birth center, emergency care, mental health, cardiac care, orthopedics, rehabilitation, medical imaging and surgery.

The new Owatonna Hospital is slated to open in 2009, will sit on 20 acres and connect to the Owatonna Clinic-Mayo Health System 26th Street facility, creating an integrated healthcare campus.
