The Penny George Institute for Health and Healing

Transforming health care

The George Institute came into existence in 2003 through the visionary support of the George Family Foundation and the Ted and Roberta Mann Foundation. Since its establishment, the George Institute has received strong community support. With this support, the George Institute has:

  • Established a comprehensive integrative medicine process and program that blends the best evidence-based conventional therapies with healing therapies
  • Developed innovative, proactive models of care that embrace the strengths of the whole person—body, mind and spirit—and the families and communities in which we live
  • Grown to serve both inpatients and outpatients through services, education and innovative clinical research. Each month, the George Institute’s team of integrative health professionals provides enhanced care through more than 1,500 inpatients visits and 800 outpatient visits.

“Following the ravages of a brain tumor, I was left with severe facial droop on the left side of my face. I did not want to return to school or any other part of the outside world, and spent most of my efforts attempting to hide my face. Through surgeries and the magic of the practitioners at the George Institute, the left side of my face is nearly 100 percent reanimated. I am fully healthy and life is worth living again.” - Major Bowen, brain tumor survivor, Augsburg College graduate, Abbott Northwestern’s Institue for Health and Healing patient

“The mind-body connection is very important to healing. I prescribe acupuncture for anxiety and pain and this has been very helpful to my patients. I also frequently refer patients for dietary and exercise consultation. With the LiveWell Fitness Center as part of the Institute George Institute, we have a tremendous resource here at Abbott Northwestern with fitness as a major part of rehabilitation. This has been invaluable for the patients I serve in the Cancer Rehabilitation program as they move beyond rehabilitation to restoration.”
- Nancy Hutchison, MD, medical director, Lymphedema and Cancer Rehabilitation program, Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute
